Default Will series II starter fit series I 3.8L ??

Does anyone know if you can bolt on the smaller, higher torque starter found on the 3800 Series II engine onto an earlier Series I block ??

Never tried, nor do I remember ever reading about anyone that's tried it.
Have you at least gone to the store and set the two side by side to see what, if any, differences there might be physically with the mounting surface?

Might be worth a try, if you have a friendly local auto parts guy that won't mind pulling a couple of parts for you to look at.

I did do that and other than the series II being smaller in motor diameter the drive end looked pretty much the same.
I know the series II is more expensive but it's also a stronger motor and it's definitely lighter. The series II is 1.7 Kw and the series I is 1.2 Kw.
My Regal is a beater but since the starter was failing I was looking into putting the better one in.
If it fits it would surely be a better choice for someone doing performance modifications.
