I have recently purchased a 1989 Buick LeSabre Custom... It's a wounderful car (knock on the wood) and I am in love with it that is why I want to make it better and fix it a little bit. I am not a mechanic, but I am sure full of enthusiasm. Here are some of the few problems I have discovered and want to fix.


1. The radio.


The radio is sure acting weird. When I hit the power button you can hear the noice in the speakers... it's jsut a buzz, the particular thing though is that the lights on the radio don't come up... you can't see the clock and pushing the buttons has no effect what so ever, the only sign of life is the noice from the speacers... My first guess is that the radio is busted, so I went to the junk yard and got the same radio, I pluged it in and... the same thing just the noice from the speakers that's it. It seams like someone played with the wires or something... maybe that could be the problem, however I would really appreciate if anyone could help me out. Thanks a lot.

 

Get yourself a Haynes or Chiltons Manual from a local auto parts store. It will tell you what each wire should do! Does it look like there is alot of tape or connectors on the wires? Someone probably wired into them and crossed some up! follow the wires in the dash, make sure none are frayed. Make sure Everything is Grounded as well! The black wire should be on a GOOD Peice of metal Screwed down Tight. I hope this helps! The buzzing could be blown speakers, but that wouldnt make your lights on the radio stay off. Stupid question, is your dimmer switch all the way up??

 

Those static noises are almost always caused by bad grounds. it could be the body isn't grounded to the battery very well too. check ground connection from battery to the engine, battery to the body, and engine to the body. Some cars don't have a direct wire from battery ground to the body, make one, that will help with some issues in the future. As stated above, make sure the radio ground is connected solid. It is also possible that someone hooked up the wrong wire to ground. Some oddball factory stereo systems ran the speaker grounds together, not seperately to the stereo, if that was the case, and someone installed a new stereo without changing the wiring, you can get interferance that way too.
