Cool 98 gs intermittent heat

Hi,
I own a 98 Regal GS with dual climate control. My car seems to get heat sometimes and most of the time it doesn't. The blower controls are working. I replaced the thermostat, had it flushed last year and a new heater core put in, but the heat was not very hot. Now it sometimes blows heat but mostly just blows ambient air. I'm wondering if it can be the temperature actuator motors or something else. I have the service manuals but they indicate the use of a scanner I don't have. Does anyone have any insight into this problem, it would be much appreiated.

First off you need to check your cabin filter to make sure its not plugged. Its on the pass. side below the wiper. If that is ok, then make sure the mode door is working. Does it cycle from defrost to vent to floor? There is 2 temp actuators. Pass is behind the glove box and the drivers is by the gas pedel. They are black, square with a pointed end. Work your temp and see if they are moving. The shaft goes all the way through, so you can see it moving.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I checked the cabin filter, it was dirty but not clogged. The controls work for the air direction, from defrost to center vents to floor. It only blows cold air, even if you turn the temp to 90 degrees. Also, I tried to use the duel heat control for the passenger side and it also blows cold air ,even if the control is turned all the way up. I looked under the drivers side for the actuator door, but couldn't find it. Does the kick panel need to be removed? Can you see it on the passenger side, without kick panel removal? Exactly what am I looking for visually?

Glad to hear I am not the only one with steam heat. We had our boiler replaced about 4 years ago with a much more efficent system that regulates its own water intake. I spent the prior 6 winters making sure there was always enough water in the old boiler. I was always afraid of having it go to low. Another good thing to do is flush the system every now and then.
