Smile 99 Regal GSE Driver Info Center Dimmed out

My wife has a 99 Regal GSE and the Driver info center as well as the odometer/trip meter are totally unreadable. I think the driver info center went out first and the meter followed suit. I am gathering that this is a common problem with these. Has anyone ripped one open to investigate. Are there some resistors going high or what. If anyone knows what the deal is with these, please let me know. I really need this fixed quick!

As long as you are a little bit mechanically inclined, you can fix this in about 30 minutes and spend less than $20. I found this video on youtube. There are a few threads about it on www.regalgs.org. This beats spending $500 on a new cluster.

Basically, once you have taken apart the dash and disconnected the gauge cluster and removed it, you unclip the tabs around the cluster. After you remove the back, you can slide out the circuit board and there are 10 transistors that will have bad solder joints, or will be missing altogether. You just need to solder in new resistors, and it will work perfectly. I can't remember the size, but in the youtube video I posted, it states the right resistance. I also bought a cheap solder kit for about $10. Everything from radio shack. I had never even soldered anything before, and I did it.

I had this problem myself, and I fixed it following this method. Good luck. Feel free to ask me any questions.
