Default 2000 Buick Regal GSE trouble stying started

So, Here is the deal....
My girlfriend was drving the 2000 Regal GSE one day and it just died on her and would not start. So, the next day I go and look at it and it started right up and I drove it to her parents house until I got off work that day. WEnt and picked it up and took it to gas station adn filled it up and it died again. I finally got it started and moved it to the side of the station and sometimes it would start but I would have to keep giving it gas to keep it started and if i didnt it would die then eventually it just wouldnt start. So i went and got it the next day and it barley started and it ran like crap but i finally got it to the mechanic. It was blowing out black smoke the whole way the gf said. All they said is it needed spark plugs and yaddy yaddy ya. Does anyone have any suggestions on what the problem could be? ANd it ran just fine up until that day and it all of a sudden started to do what it was doing. it wasnt like it just progressed and then died out, it was all of a sudden. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!!

I suspect the reason they said it needed spark plugs was possibly because they were fouled by the engine running rich. Among the reasons it is running rich could be fuel pressure regulator , clogged air filter, maybe an oxygen sensor. What is needed is to see if the computer has any codes in it to direct someone to the malfunctioning system. Then we go from there. You had to get a check engine now light! Excessive black smoke could cause the catalytic converter to overheat because the engine is getting too much fuel.

I just use this car as a work car, to drive back and forth, and the dash odometer and stuff like that didnt even work on the car. It just doesnt light up or anything like that. It could be a fuse or just the dash. But the mechanic said he would have to replace the dash to get any readings, because he said he couldnt get any readings at all from the car.

It's easy for me to be here and say this or that , but the person with the car has the advantage.
That said, Its not that difficult to check the fuses. Can you do that?
Whether the dash works or not , codes can still be obtained from the vehicle computer.
It is my understanding that Auto Zone will do this free of charge. Might be worth to check out.
It could very well be just a fuse.

Yes, I checked all the fuses on the passenger side of dash and under the hood. all looked good. The only problem with taking it to Autozone is that the closest one is about 20 miles from me, and my car wont stay started but for about a mile or two haha. But, I appreciate your input, and I finally found a buddy of mine has a scanner so he is going to come by sometime and see if he can read any codes. I will post an update if I find the problem!
