KAD1 - did you receive a verdict?

Well, I took it to a Chevy dealer that is supposed to be good and they state flat out it was the trans, which is really upsetting as Buick told me the trans was not at all affected and it was most definitly the cat (why the mechanic was so intent on finding a part part leading to the cat). I spoke with GM and they refuse to help despite the fact that the trans had to be replaced at 37K and now 50K later it's gone again. They stated it is out of warranty and cuz my mechanic replaced the cat, which is a bunch of bull because 1) Buick swore it was not the trans 2)the cat has nothin to do with the trans and 3) I already had 1 trans replaced. I told Buick very clearly that if it was the cat AND the trans, I wasn't going to replace them. I will never ever ever buy a GM car and I will probably stay away from American cars in general.

I can't really afford a new car now (not working)and plus I justpoured a lot of money into it (new cat, new brakes/oil change, spark plugs and less than a year ago 3 engine mounts, tires are pretty new). Not to mention what the mechanic replaced (he did that on his own) and I have toget the Sirrius radio de/re-installed. I don't know what I'm going to do. What if the new trans doesn't solve it? What if that DEXCOOL issue starts impacting it - there already was that leaky valve that was replaced. If there wasn't the DEXCOOL and if it was 100% the trans would fix it, I would do it and keep it for another 50K. But, those are 2 big ifs. Arrghh!!!

Any suggestions?

Hmmmmmmm It's a shame your not having the same issues I'm having or we could both swap out the same items and see what happened to the other one. But, from what you have said thus far, with the jerking and slowing uphill and such, I kinda does sound like the tranny to me. I'm a former mechanic and have been working on (diagnosing or tinkering with) cars most of my life. This is my take. You have already spent all this money on the vehicle already and if you get rid of it, you'll be out that money that you already put into it. However, if you cannot get the tranny fixed permanently then you may look at trading it in or whatnot. On the other hand, you ARE</span> on the correct site to find out what you can about a possibly fix for that tranny for that car so, If you can still drive it and not have to many other issues than this right now, it's a good bet that you should hang on to it and keep asking on here and in the mean time, try and find you a REAL</span> mechanic. One who knows how to diagnose and replace what needs to be replaced. Not just a parts swapper and seller. Hope that helps somewhat.
Ummm only way to really find out if it is the tranny for sure is to find a person that does buick tranny rebuilds on the side. Talk to him about it and from what you tell him, he will probably be able to tell if it's the tranny or not. That's the situation I'm in right now so, I gotta save up some money then have the person I was put into contact with rebuild mine.

well, its an unfortunate situation you have been going through. and its sad to see you give up on all gm products, but i can't say i blame you, considering all you have been through.

but really, i think the BIGGEST problem is the mechanic. not just the car. i hate to see people like the guy "fixing" your car, just rake people like you over the coals. i hope he gets what he has coming to him.

Thanks guys. I'm leaning toward keeping it, but I'm really nervous about the trans/DEXCOOL. I had a trans replaced in a Taurus and it never really worked and I ended up trading it in for the Buick for next to nothing less than 1 year later - and I'm actually pretty good about paying as little as possible for a car.

What I'm most nervous about is 2 tranny specialists (Buick and another) said it wasn't the tranny.

Oh well, thanks for your help and support. I guess I'll start looking at other cars and if I run into an incredible deal, I'll dump the Buick. If you think of any suggestions, please respond to this as it'll alert me in my email.

Good luck with yours 89-Lesabre-dood! Let me know how you make out.

Thanks Desperate, I'll keep you posted and If you look around in your area, I'm sure you can find a tranny guy that fixes em on the side that you can trust. It would be best to look for someone that knows what he's talking about. you should be able to tell from the first few statements out of his mouth. Also, you should try and find a GM or a buick tranny guy. Preferably one who's been doing it for some time. I wish you all the best luck with yours. In the end, a car is a car is a car... no one is better than another. My boss used to always tell me that because we would always have the BMW's and Lexus and hummers form the dealership coming up to get gas for one that was sold and basically, he was saying, there all the same, they got tires, an engine, doors, steering wheel, etc... it's just taking care of it and knowing that right people that matter the most. Good luck with whatever you end up doing.

The catalytic convert did not commit suicide. A local mechanic radio talk show points out they are murdered--murdered by something else wrong causing them to fail 99.9% of the time. I believe that in your case too.

So, what exactly is murdering them? Is Buick guilty of murder in the first degree to cause them to fail after the law expires?

what he is trying to say is that if your engine is running poorly, then the unburned crap sent through the exhaust will clog the cat prematurely.

Hi,

I still think my engine is running poorly. I worked out a deal with the transmission from GM and it definitly improved the situation, but on an intermittent and much reduced level, it still hesitates or slightly bucks going uphill. Also, I was in a traffic jam for about 30-40 min and about 20 min into it, the car started jerking/hesitating when I pressed the gas pedal to go a few yards at a time. It got increasingly worse as time went on. I was starting to get worried and then fortunately the jam broke and everything was fine. I reported it to the dealer but they said they need to be able to repeat it, which is hard to do. Any thoughts? Thanks!
