Just to share a little experience. My 2001 Buick Century would not start and stay running after I had shut it off after driving for a while.
Remedy: I don''t think my gas cap is venting so it created almost like a reverse pressure and didn''t allow the fuel to go to the fuel pump. So I opened the fuel tank cap to relievethe pressure, kept my foot on the gas slightly for a little as I started up and drove for a while. After a few miles it was ok. Problem only occure only when it is hot outside and when the car has been driven say 30 minutes or more.

I agree sounds like you fixed it, maybe a new gas cap would help also
