My dad's car, an 02 Regal with the 3.4 V6, 50k miles, suddenly developed a problem. It seems to just shut off once things get warmed up. Had to be towed home over the weekend. The car started up fine the next morning. Our neighbor is the head mechanic at the Buick dealer that they purchased the car from. He brought his computer home on Monday night and determined that the BCM (Body Control Module) needs to be replaced (he thinks). I guess he is replacing it tonight. He said that he's never seen this problem though, EVER before. Seems kinda odd to me. Just searching for information about this.

Thanks in advance.

Historically cutting off HAS been a problem.

The CUT OFF possibilities are a bit numerous from battery cables, loose or bad wiring and connections to crankshaft sensors.

First get the codes read and further troubleshoot by determining the type of cut off you have. Fuel or ignition, then trace it from there during the cut off situation.

Here are some types of CUT OFF...
Completely no power.. no dash lights, will not crank, etc.. points to the battery/charging system, batt cables etc. problem.
Just a engine stop... will not restart but will crank with dash lights head lights and and indicators still working, ranges from fuel to ignition.
Ignition cut off.. no spark, addresses the ignition system problem but with the OBDII will more often throw a code. Ignition modules and sensors have a history of failing where the problem seems to temperature related.
A fuel pump or filter problem ... the car just runs out of gas from lack of flow or pressure. No codes
Security. will cut off the fuel pulses to the injectors and show a SECURITY indicator.

Hope this helps...
