HowTo Idle Learn Regal Limited 3.1 '90
Hi,
this is my first post in this forum.
I own a Buick Regal Limited 3.1 1990 Sedan 55k miles
I recently had trouble with the soundsystem not turning off, radio
went off, EQ / AMP / antenna were staying on with ignition on.
Fixed this, by disconnecting the battery for a minute.
Problem now is, that rpm varies between 450 and 800 just right
after slowing down to zero. What's more is that rpm is at 2000 after
starting the engine staying there for two seconds, going to 750 gently, which is idle I guess.
I heard that after resetting the ECM an idle learning procedure
has to be triggered and performed.
How long do I have to take away battery power to initiate the ECM rest?
How can I reset the ECM other than taking away battery power?
Do I have to trigger the learning, how is it done?
What do I have to take account for, while learning is in progress?
Maybe something else is the problem here?
I already tried a few things trying to get into idle learning, but do
not know whether it entered ever.
Hope someone can describe the issue for my lovely Regal.
Thanks in advance,
Martin, Stuttgart, Germany

First- you can remove the " ECM" fuse to erase the computer's adaptive memory, no need to disconnect the battery.
Second- the computer will adapt (relearn) according to your driving habits and this takes place automatically as you drive. Just be patient and if you had no problems with the vehicle before disconnecting the battery it will relearn slowly by itself. It takes a few trips to accomplish this and you should notice an improvement each time you take it out to drive it. How do you like it over there and how long have you been there?

Glad to hear from you. I have relatives somewhere in Germany. Many years ago my father used to write to his brother there.
That Regal is a good car and anytime you have any problem with it feel free to ask and I will be glad to assist you. I still own a 1990 Buick Century. At one time many years ago I used to own a Volkswagon Beetle. That goes too far back for me to remember , but at that time the job I had required me to spend a lot of time driving and the car was pretty small inside compared to today's cars. The Buick I have has over 135,000 miles on it. Gives very little trouble. BTW where did you learn to write such good English?
