I just bought a 74 riviera 455 that''s all stock, and completely rot free. The problem is there is no oil pressure. the previous owner stated that the oil pump was just replaced by his brother, then it lost oil pressure on the test run. I pulled the base off the pump, and when I pushed the gears all the way up in the housing, there is approx quarter to a half inch between the bottom of the gears and the plate surface. Before I invest in the rebuild, I need to figure out what they did wrong so I don''t waste my money. Any info as to what they could have done wrong will be appreciated.

Thanks, Link0-0-0

you might try using a mechanical gauge, just to check the pressure, if that is the problem it could be your pump, or bearings. But before I replaced anything, I''d hook up an old style oil pressure gauge and run it.
