Default transmission sensor

I have a 93 Buick Regal Gran Sport, excellent condition. The service engine light started coming on. After a diagnostic test, I was told there was a sensor in the automatic transmission which lets the car know which gear it is in that is going bad. For them to fix it, they would first have to get the part from GMC and because of the year of the vehicle, I may or may not be able to get a replacement and it would be 2-3 months wait period. Is there any wait to disconnect that sensor rather than go through the expense of replacing it which will cost about $1200.

Before spending that amount of money hopefully you could find a mechanic willing to pull a sensor from a wreck and test it. I have had great success buying electronic parts that come from used cars especially wrecked ones with low miles. A good mechanic that knows how to test electric parts by using specifications from GM can save you usually half the cost of new. True, there is no way of knowing how long the part will last but my experiences with tested electric parts have been pretty good. Also, I would like to add that I ask about the life of each part as respects its history. If it is a part that has a history of wearing out or prone to failures I only buy new. So far I haven't regretted buying used yet. I wish you the best. KM
