Although your normally aspirated 3.8 is basicly the same as the super- or turbo-charged 3.8's, there are enough internal differences (such as compression ratio) that I would recommend against trying to just drop a compressor onto it.

If you have access to a supercharger or a turbo set-up, I would try to get the whole engine. Second choice is to go to the aftermarket. You want to follow somebody who has done this before.

Well that is true but using a static boost chart it is safe to do about 4-6 psi on 91 octane. There have been plenty of instances where people do this (i.e. -ugh- 3.8L mustangs -jk- with as high of a compression ratio on it and running an aftermarket supercharger at like 7-8 psi with no problems on 91 octane. So given that i don't keep the gas floored all the time and i don't red line the motor7 psi will be ok on a motor that already has over 9 to 1 cr as long as i use at least 91 octane (kinda pushing it).And there's too many boundaries and too much red tape to try and just "sneak" ina whole new motor just because.

Now my only problem is trying to find a set-up for my car and somebody who has done this before.

Well, it sounds like you are better informed than I gave you credit for.

That's the kind of thing we used to be able to do before everything was computer controlled. Which is why I suggested getting the whole engine with sensors and programming. For example, if the supercharger bypass is just vacuum controlled, it'll be easy. If it goes through the computer, your existing engine controls and programming probably won't be able to handle it. Also, I believe there are other internal engine changes besides compression ratio.

But you probably already know these things. Suggest you check out 3800performance.com

Good luck, Brian

well gee thnx, i think. some of us newbiesactually know what were talking about. then againi was lucky enough to go to a specialized school that had access to alldata and similar programs. the cam specs are actually the same as is the bore and stroke. the ccs for the heads are the only difference i believe but other than that they are spitting images of each other. and now a days there are programs you can buy top flash the computer if not you can always send it to a performance shop just as in the case of the supercharged v6 mustangs. all codes are ment to be broken, bent and manipulated.

but thank you for your help and ty hopefully it'll all work fine and i will let you all know if it works but plz let me know if u find anything that'll help ty

O.K!

Other thoughts: Do you know if pistons, rings, rods, etc. are different materials? Also, I'm aware that the computer can be reprogrammed, but I've found that saying you can do it and actually doing it well are two different things. And be sure that you have or can add the sensors that you'll need.

Didn't mean to rain on your parade. Just wanted you to realize that this is more than a "bolt-on".

PS: I have a '97 Park Avenue Ultra with the Series II supercharged 3800. I recently sold a similar '92 with about 200,000 miles that I had from new. I do most of my own maintenance and repairs. If you want to know how the factory did something, let me know.

hey you know what no worries i know that most people on here think everything is easy just slap it on with out tuning something or chaging so something else. um i think all the internals are made of the same stuff cause its just the crs are different the l67 (sc'ed 3800) is 8.5 to 1. but anyways yeah i'm one of the few who kinda knows what he's doing.

really that's great i wish to one my one shop one day. so you don't think i need a rebild on a motor with 81k on it? Great i absoultely will ty for helping me out cause i'm sure i'll need some help.

Really, 81,000 miles is nothing; assuming the engine has had reasonable maintenance. Many people don't realize that the 3800 was originally the Buick V8, which wasknown for its smoothness and longevity. GM literally cut off the back two cylinders.

yeah i do give it great maintenance regular oil chages sometimes i go over a little by a few mile but i have used synthetic for the last 50k miles before it was regular castrol (used car) platinum plugs a KnN and premium for the last 35K but i do drive it a little hard but nothing like constant burnout or redlining it so all in all good maintenance. and yeah i know that that motor is a buick motor and that was the nickname my carwas given at school, firechicken w/ a sawed off v8, lol.
