Torque/Transmission...........HELP ASAP

Hey guys I need some help with my brother in-law's car. he drives a 1983 lesabre and we believe that the torque converter went bad..!

The car doesn't move forward when it is on "Drive" and once it gets rolling to a higher speed the car will not be OK but it will be driveable.

We want to gobuy a new torque convertorbut we can not figure ot what trasnmission came with the car. So here is the question:

Is there a code stamped in the transmission that we can read to find out what transmission we have?

I've called summit racing, advance auto parts and no one can tell me what torque converter I need...!
