I just purchased a nice 1996 LeSabre Limited. Condition of the sale was the check engine light needed to be fixed. I just brought the car home, and it's on again. The car runs great (I haven't had it long enough to tell about mileage). I'll be taking it back to the dealer who sold it to me (129K miles) - but I wondered if anyone out there has had similar problem. No oil leaks, egine runs smoothly. Guy claims they replaced the intake manifold gasket and water pump.

Anyone out there doing their own OBD II work?

obd2s are a lil more sensative than the first obds. there are more parameters that will trigger a code.

did u try lil stuff first, gas cap wuld be my first guess.

but if u have a light coming on, then u have a trouble code or codes, what are they???

Thanks for the reply - one of Audi tech sons is bringing home an OBD II tester, which I hope sheds some light on the problem. The gas cap is a good idea - NJ insepction failed me for a bad one a few years ago on another car - I guess they lose their seal after a while.

When we fix it, I'll post the results here.

The scanner turned up problems with the O2 sensor (before the CAT) and the Mass Airflow Sensor. The MAS is a little pricey, so we'll probably change ouyt the O2 sensor first - under $60 here in NJ. The scanner he borrowed sells for around $150 on the web - although cars throw some screwey codes, this might be good investment. The socket is right under the dash inside the car.

We re-set the codes, and will check it again after the check engine light comes back on.

Should help the MPG when we're done with this.
