I have a 1992 buick lesabre. The check engine light came on a couple of years ago, we changed out the O2 sensor and it stayed on. We had the code read and it came up 41, cam sensor. We changed out the cam sensor, the light stayed on. Changed out the magnet on the cam as well, the check engine light stayed on. I made the mistake of taking the car to a mechanic.During the2 weeks that he had my car hereplaced the cam sensor, the cam magnet, the control module, checked the wiring, and changed out the computer. Since the computer wasn't the problem, he changed itback tothe original though. The check engine light is still on. I had afriend look at the car and check the wiring, etc.again. So far he can't find a problem either. Any suggestions?

Sure.. Its the CRANKshaft sensor... it shares wiring with the camshaft sensor thus throwing its code instead of the real problem.

My Lesabre went through the same path of troubleshooting and I aquired alot of spare parts in the process. .
That code seems to come up assuming that the engine is still running.. If the CRANKshaft module stutters it throws that 41 code as a CAMshaft error.. Still cCould be the ignition module that sends that code but chances are slim. Best odds are on it, many have swapped it out because its easy and still had to swap the CRANKshaft sensor.

Have you had any engine stutters or jerking or such? Mine didnt enough to warrent thinking it was anything serious. Just a stall after a long ride on the interstate at the first stop and that code.

Good luck.

Will check the Crank sensor too then, thanks. A mechanic told me it couldnt be that one because my car still runs and it runs perfect as if nothing is wrong. No stalling, no stuttering...nothing wrong except that annoying light. Will try this and see if it fixes it...let you know. Thanks.

Sorry, couldn't log in due to a "cookie" problem with my original name. Had to re-register.

Code still hasn't cleared. We've tried changing out the camshaft sensor and been messing with the spark plug wires (suggestion from another mechanic) and no luck. I would really appreciate any other ideas. I'm at a loss.

The original mechanic that I took the car to thinks that the cam magnet is in backwards. We can't figure out how that would be possible since it only goes one way. Is there anyone else who has changed out the cam magnet? Any suggestions on another way to install it? Is it even possible?

Mine gave me a code 41 and it ended up being the Crankshaft sensor.

Good Luck

The best thing to do when a code comes up is go to a main library wherever you live and go to the reference section. I get on the computer and check out Mitchell's on Demand for free and print out the diagnostic steps for the code that is present. The one person who posted that it might not be the cam sensor could be right because a lot of driveability codes don't neccessary mean that is the problem per sae. I don't have the diagnostics here to e-mail you but the library has what you need so print it out and read what the steps are for correcting the dtc. Edited by: swhitney133
