What is this tube called and where do I get another one?

1998 Century with L82 3100 SFI. Tube I am pointing @ in the pic is broke on the valve cover end under the coil. Tube is in front of the TB and next to air intake temp sensor. The local shops can't find it just the PCV line that goes from the PCV valve to behind the throttle plate.

I'm not sure about the proper "technical" term for it, but that's the breather tube.

Merc6 11-02-2011 12:02 PM

That was quick! Will try and Google it before heading back out for a 2nd attempt. Was cleaning the throttle and noticed it wasn't even connected upon diss assembly.

2k2cse 11-02-2011 02:46 PM

I just happened to be on at the right time. haha. It has a weird connection at the back of the motor, it just fits in place. Mine came off a couple months ago when I took the intake off to try to fix my NSS. It caused my car to idle terrible at the first start of the day, causing it to die a couple times. When i found that it was off, i just put it back in place..it didn't even feel like it actually connected, but everything's been fine since..

You might have to make a trip to the JY to get one. I don't know if you can get it at the dealer or auto parts store

Guys,I would have liked to view the pix, but couldn't get it to zoom out.
In any case you should be able to get any part you need for a 98 Buick from any dealer and if they tell you they can't get it , go to a different dealer. Some parts guys are just lazy and don't want to through the trouble to dig out the part #. Have much experience with many dealer parts departments and some are very good and some are, well you know............. It is always important to bring the vin # with you when looking for any parts and some parts for GM vehicles are interchangeable with other divisions.

Merc6 11-05-2011 08:28 PM

Yeah went back and the guys knew kinds what it was but they still don't cary it. Will try dealership if Pull-A Part doesn't have it. Their inventory is Regals so far just as the other places. Will jump on wiki again and see who all has this 3100. If i'm lucky I might even find the airbox, coolant overflow, heads, tb, and intake for future use.

hanky 11-06-2011 02:31 PM

The dealership can order any part for you as long as it is available. Sometimes its worth the wait to get the right new part compared to scouting around and settling for something that might have half of its life gone. It depends a lot on just what the part is and what it does too. Of course, price is always a consideration also.

Merc6 11-06-2011 06:15 PM

My luck it's a $35 part. Found quite a few 3100 and 3400 cars in inventory just have to hope. It looks like there is a o ring holding it on but I have to tear half the car apart to get it out. Might luck up on an LG8 airbox to gut and experiment in my other thread.

2k2cse 11-06-2011 08:14 PM

If you find a decent LG8 Century, you should take all the parts you can get. More than likely, you'll find something to use or upgrade. Other than what we've already discussed, I'm not really sure what other differences there are.

Merc6 11-06-2011 09:33 PM

heads, up and low intake, egr, zip tube, air box, coolant overflow are things off the top of my head. I also printed out a list of 3400's as well. I can't go 2 miles w/o seeing another same color Century and 4 regals so I am going on blind faith any usable parts are there.

*edit* center console...I HATE the 98 flip out cup holders that refuse to hold any cup. and a new armrest catch cause I had to cannibalize the rear center console to keep the front seat one closed.

2k2cse 11-06-2011 10:43 PM

Haha yeah, the armrest/console on the older Century is really annoying and outdated. If you can find a decent Regal the same color, you should look into the front and rear bumpers. Especially if it has fog lights. I don't think they would fit in the Century bumper. I've given up on getting them. I might just pick up a cheap set somewhere.

Merc6 11-07-2011 07:01 AM

Plenty of Regals here...wit surviving body parts I'm not sure. Reason I went Century 3100 over the 3800 and 3800 s/c. Regals here are considered the "Hood Cars" and been through hell and back. Front rear and side damage 4 different tire sizes you name it, it's already broke. After you factor that, MY 2005 cars are now halfway into the rusted out category here. Glad my 05 Subaru isn't nowhere in that category yet. The fogs are larger than the the cutouts but dremel could get that. I'm more a fan of the grille and the larger exhaust cutout(s) in the rear if I decide to just put twin tips on and call it a day on the exhaust overhaul. Hopefully if all else is gone that tube is still there and in one piece for me to at least see what I can do to doctor mine up. Maybe the grommet from the PCV in front can snug fit it. Depending on what they charge me, I might grab headlights to replace mine. Too lazy to put them in the oven to break apart and reseal them.

2k2cse 11-07-2011 04:41 PM

I've been wanting to pull my headlights apart to clean, possibly paint, and put some led strips in, but I'm afraid i'd break them. haha I like your idea though.

Merc6 11-07-2011 08:05 PM

Found a new tube off a lumina. The centuries out there didn't have em still. There is a rubber piece on the end that went bad on mine. Didn't really need the tube but got it anyway. Will take a daylight pic of the rubber end that is bad on mine.

I found a few 3100 newer style and 3400's. Might go back tomorrow for upper and lower intake and if foolish enough the heads too. Waiting on a few 60* swap experts to confirm the 3400 was a direct fit for the 3100. The rumor of you can't swap old 3100 and new 3100/3400 uim is true. don't even bolt up the same. LIM is needed for the swap as well I also assume TB too. No luck on regal parts or even lights of any kind. The newer grilles were all front end damaged for the centuries. Did find a center console completely mangled/ran over. It was somehow survived by the plastic clip that holds it closed. In theory I got what I needed and then some.

Pics are large...

List of stuff minus the armrest clip.

Wow, I didn't realize there was that big of a difference between the two UIMs..

Merc6 11-08-2011 05:50 AM

Yep just a UIM would have been a easy swap cause one of the 3100 LG8's was already off and sitting under the car with the mangled armrest. When I get the LIM off the 3400 I will then make the choice of going in or not for heads. Price of UIM/LIM should be $20-$30 heads would tack on $37 each. Going by store to get the push rod on the way l to avoid the rocker removal just yet.

Almost tempted to have all the threads merged but it would look like a huge jigsaw puzzle of posts and replies.

After getting 2 breather tubes (one for my car and 1 for the 3400ish swap) I noticed the end that floats has a rubber gasket that went bad on mine. It reminds me sorta of the Christmas Tree pop its in the door panels but hollow. Will take pics tomorrow and post before work if possible.
