'62 lesabre rear main seal leak

Can I change the rear crank seal without pulling the motor?

If it has the circular seal you will need to pull the trans. if it has the split seals that can be replaced with just the oil pan removed.

Thanks for the reply. Fel-pro shows a split seal. I have some experience with in-frame repairs - head jobs, cam swaps, even a valve damaged piston w/rod in a Datsun truck. My next question is there a tool to remove the upper half and clean the groove?

There is a tool that looks like a what we used to call a Chinese finger. It went on to the end of the rope/seal and as you pulled it it gripped the rope tighter. Some auto supply stores may still sell them. They may even have a newer type seal remover/installer.
Once the seal comes out there won't be too much of anything in there to clean out.
Those seals often became hard and refused to seal and had to be replaced. Let us know how you make out on this. Thanks
I am assuming you know you have to lower the rear main cap to do this and then you will see what the seal looks like.

I think I remember a tool like that. Might've seen it in a Whitney catalog. I'll see what I can find. What with this leak, and some other minor issues, I'm considering pulling the lump. When it warms up later today, I'll get under her and see what it looks like. Thanks again for the info.
