I have a '98 Regal supercharged; the supercharger bearings are making noise especially when the car is in gear with the break on. The car has 120,000 miles on it. The Buick dealer says, buy a new car, or spend $1500.00 to get it fixed. Right now, we don't have the money for either. What is the progression of deterioration of the supercharger? Will the car just stop when it completely fails? The bearing noise is not excessive at the moment. Will it start to squeal when it gets bad? Will the car run in a normal non-supercharged fashion if it is disabled by removing a belt, or will that affect another component or the emissions?

I rebuilt the supercharger on my old '92 Ultra years ago by getting Eaton parts from a truck repair concern. It was fairly easy, but I now see this listed as a service on e-Bay. You might want to check that.


I don't have that car now and yours could be different, but I think that belt also drives other components. It probably would be difficult or impossible to just bypass the supercharger. During most operation, the supercharger is effectively idling, so I don't think you would notice much difference except at WOT (wide open throttle) at least unless and until it got so bad that it seized up. I can't imagine that happening any time soon.


So, my guess is that you can just keep on keeping on until you get the money or change cars.


PS: $1,500 is a better price than I was given!


PPS: Be sure your (supercharger) oil is at the correct level.

 

BSS,yours was a 92 which is series one L67. he has a series 2. very different.





take off the sc belt. as it only drives the sc, if the noise goes away, then you know whats wrong. but it probably isn't the bearings. when the belt is off, (AND THE ENGINE) check for play at the pulley. you want to rotate the pulley back and forth. there should be very little, to no play, back and forth. and absolutely no play up or down.
