Hi,

My 2004 Regal's (10000km only) air filter is kindof dirty.

It is an[OEM]oily paper filter and everything sticks to it, be it dust, insects or other stuff. Of course, the dirt is stuck mainly where the air intake is, (the rest of the filter looks clean).

The question is, should I replace the filter ?

If you can see the ligth through the air filter and if your car doesn't
take more fuel as usual you can continue a while with it.

Have you compared with a new filter ?

I'll try the "light method" :). Even though I'm a little skeptical because the filter is oiled and therefore more opaque.

I went to Canadian Tire to get a new one but they had none.Anyway, CT only sells regular [un-oiled]paper filters so I cannot compare. :(

Guess I'll change it anyway [when I find one].

I wonder, what if the dealer sprayed some "engine-look-good-to-sell" stuff while the engine was running ? That might explain the oily look'n'feel.

Anyway, I've changed the air filter and run some Motomaster injector cleaner through the fuel system and the mileage improved from 14.7mpg to 16.8 (i.e. 16l/100km -> 14l/100km) all city driving.
