Electrical issue
 

I have a 97 Buick LeSabre custom with 97,000 miles on it in the past six months it has developed an electrical problem where when after started the voltage will drop from normal down to say 10 bolts for only a second or two and then go right back up the vehicle does not kill or stall does anyone have any ideas what the problem is I would appreciate it thank you

Post won't be here long, wrong forum. I'd say loose or corroded connection/battery terminals? May be beginning stages also of battery going bad, how old is that? Voltage should maintain around 14 volts ideally, if holding at say 12-12.5 volts alternator rectifiers may be partially defective.

GM was using the single wire alternator with internal regulator. Can't say these days what they've thought of......

As I said, the97 lesabre has 71000 mi. New battery and altenator. I have cleaned the ground terminals in the trunk, both fender wells, battery to block and inside pass. Compartment below fuse panel. My voltage drop occurs hot or cold engine and any speed and at random affecting the lights. Does not stall the engine. Can anyone tell me where all the ground connections are? I,m at a loss. Any help appreciated. Thankyou

97 or 71K miles, doesn't much matter. Everything new and replaced, I'd question alternator itself if rebuilt and not new. No mention of checking positive terminals/connections? Positive recharges battery- negative leaves battery.

As I recall many decades ago also with rebuilt CHrysler alternators; that symptom is a sign of failing alternator or regulator, they were so cheap. Started rebuilding my own, seemed better end results.

If there the same, the GM alternator has a maybe 14 gauge single wire connected with positive which regulates the internal regulator on those for output. Stupid Corvette ran it in series with the idiot light, if bulb went out alternator wouldn't charge (was brown wire).

I'm not a mechanic, never claimed to be, just liked working on my own and a few other cars over many years. Maybe somebody else has better answer......

When you state the voltage drops down to 10. Where are you measuring it?
If you are sure the alt is working correctly putting out tha amps it is rated for(stamped on the alt housing) , the only thing left is the internal voltage regulator. Before condemning anything it is important to know where you are getting that reading.
