Have a 1971 Buick GS that I replaced the wiring with OEM wiring. Put a new custom radio in it and put in n extra in ine fuse. After using a boost on the battery to start car, I found that the in ine fuse to the radio was blown? Why? What would I do to rectify this?

 

Good project. So if the radio plays OK and the problem was that the fuse blew when jump starting, I'd try a few things. Don't put in a higher amp fuse but try a slo-blo or time delay fuse. Those are designed to hold for a brief second when a surge is present as with jump starting. Also possible a grounded condition is almost present and the surge is creating a short circuit due to the extra voltage. Not amperage so much as voltage is electrical pressure.

Other options would be surge supressors, capacitive coupling or isolation xfmrs. Not certain what's available for stereo now a days. Decades ago the problem was picking up the alternator whine and static in the speakers. Radio Shack had a kit for that and along with floating the speaker circuits (not grounding one side to car frame). Also the copper conductor spark plug wires- A big problem.

Thank you... I will order item and see if it works. Out of the 2 fuses the only one that blows is the power one not the one that keeps the radio memory going.

 

Your welcome. Forgot to mention if radio was on or off when jump starting. Also with a '71 the old speaker system (one side grounded) may be in use unless new were installed with all wiring originating from radio. May also require new battery, a few have on forums here. Um, the extra in-line fuse was the correct amps (not underrated) I'd imagine?

Once again more answers from others would be a plus but not expecting any.

Roger that on upgrades. Might of been a one time thing with dead battery too, fuse did what it was meant for?

Lol, remember one time I installed a bank of capacitors for this huge motor (part of leather tannery equip., before DoD work). Was a power factor correction, the thing short circuited, appeared to blow up. Worked fine afterwards, caps had to discharge and repolarize with existing 3 phase system. Definitely a WTF moment.

Like this style Buick, no idea what they looked like......
