No crank.

Hello folks, new here and hoping for some help. I've searched other threads on this site and didn't find anything like the problem I have. I have a 1997 LeSabre. Over the Christmas weekend it was in the single digits and below for a few days. The car started and drove fine during the day. That evening it would not start, acting like it wasn't getting gas. I put it in my garage and heated it up over night thinking the fuel lines were frozen. The next day the car started just fine. I drove a couple miles away to a gas station and filled up with gas. The car wouldn't start and had to have it towed home. As soon as the tow truck dropped the car I was able to start it up with no problems and it started everyday since. Thinking the fuel pump may be going out I put in a new fuel pump. After installation I started the car and it ran for about three minutes and shut down. Tried to restart it several times and it would run very rough for about ten seconds and shut down. Would not start again and couldn't hear the fuel pump start up. Pushed it in my garage and then tried to start it and nothing happens. No crank, just lights on the dash came on and radio played. A few times I could hear the fuel pump hum but still no crank. Thinking maybe the starter went out I crossed the posts on the starter and it kicked in. However, when the starter kicked in there was a backfire from somewhere on top of the engine and a lot of smoke but still not start. I was under the car and didn't see where the smoke came from and didn't want to try again as the car has all four wheels off the ground inside my garage and I didn't want it to catch on fire. I'm at a loss now on what to check next. I'm thinking of removing the starter and have it tested. Also, I have no idea of why it backfired. Any help someone could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance and sorry for such a long post
