Diagnosing 2000 Buick LeSabre

All,

My GF has a 2000 Buick LeSabre that won't turnover anymore. I've been reading about PK3/VAT issues but I'm not sure this is one. If I turn the key to the on position the security light will go out in about 5 seconds. In about 30 seconds I hear a noise by the trunk that I suspect is the fuel pump cycling off since the car isn't running. When I turn the key I get nothing. No starter. No security light. However sometimes this car would just start and run for days. The starter sounds good when it's working.

So I'm down to thinking it's either the VAT or the starter solenoid. How can I diagnose the solenoid? If it's the VAT could anyone recommend a good bypass kit like those used in remote start systems?

I don't have a lot of experience with these cars, but I did buy a repair manual for it. Your help is appreciated.
