Hi guys, I'm new to the forum, and I have a problem with my
transmission.

It's a 1990 Buick LeSabre Limited Edition. I have about 171,000 km's on
it, and have never had a problem with it before (driving it for 18 years).
Just this morning while I was driving to my aunt's house, I was going
about 60 km/h, while the car was in 2nd gear. I accelerated, and once i
reached 65km/h the car seemed to slip out of gear and you could hear
the car redlining...almost like as if you were in neutral, and flooring the
gas pedal. I came to a stop, and once i started accelerating again, just
after first gear, while it was about to change to second gear, it did this
again. i eventually made it home, but only going 30 km/h in first gear.
Pretty much everytime the car wants to shift, it end up going in neutral
and revving really high. I checked the vacuum hoses for the transmission
and there doesn't seem to be any cracks or holes in the cable. The gear
selector is also in good condition. I didn't get a chance to check the
transmission fluid, because my manual requires you to drive 30km and
idle the car for 3 minutes before checking it. Driving 30km with a car that
doesn't shift gears seems kind of dangerous to me, so that's about the
only thing that I haven't checked. My transmission fluid was replaced
about 3 years ago.

What can I do? Can I fix this myself? Thanks in advance guys

you might need a new transmission or there could be a problem with the selenoid

Well, it sounds kinda like the same thing that my tranny is doing. I start out in 1st and when it goes to shift into 2nd, it's shifts really hard.. and sometimes slips form time to time. I've deducted that mine is going to need to get rebuilt along the line sometimes soon. If you know anyone that works on trannies or can ask someone to find you someone, that would probably be your best bet to get it rebuilt. If you take it to a shop, your going to be looking @ about 2K US, I dunno what that converts to in canadian but needless to say, it's a lot. The only other choice you might have is to try and change the fluid if it's been some time and see if that helps at all. Otherwise, your probably looking @ replacing it. Hope that helps a bit.
