blue smoke on start up

Hey gang, I have a '99 Buick Ultra with just over 60k miles. It runs great. But upon start up in the morning it belches out a small cloud of blue smoke. It is consuming a small amount of oil but not too bad. I had one garage tell me it needed new head gaskets and that the blue smoke was the classic sign. Also, they weren't interested in doing the work on a car that old. Instead they wanted to swap the engine out with a junk yard motor. Are they correct about the head gaskets? A car with just 60k shouldnt have that problem, I think.

Any car can have that problem if the seals on the valve stems are worn and leaking oil into the combustion chamber when the engine cools down.

Most of the time those seals can be replaced without removing the head(s). Shop just needs the equip and determination to do the job, a lot cheaper than replacing the engine.
Suggest you get a few different estimates before making any decision.
