350 cam question

Hi all, I am changing the timing gears etc on my 71' skylark 350 engine. while pulling on the top cam gear it became noticeable that the cam end is moving in and out about an eight inch. My first question: is this normal? What holds the cam in place in a Buick motor? Also is it possible to pull a cam and replace it through the front of engine in vehicle(assuming top end is removed).
I did this successfully on a chevy motor 18 years ago and still drive it. Thanks for any info. I'm just not sure about the cam end play.

This is my project car 71' skylark custom convertible. Buick Rules!;)

Answer!

I talked to the mechanic that rebuilt a motor for me years ago. He says cam end play is normal and the oil pump gear helps keep cam in place. A cam is naturally forced rearward when engine runs. I'm going to have the heads freshened and pop a medium lopey cam and headers on it for some extra GO!
