How-To: Replace the Front Brake Pads on a '08 Enclave
 

Hello all,


I've recently replaced the front brake pads on a customer's '08 Enclave so I'd like to share a concise write-up on the job with you distinguished people of Buickforum ;)


1) Empty the master cylinder reservoir until it is half full.

2) Raise and support the vehicle.

3) Remove the tire and wheel assembly.

4) Install and firmly hand tighten 2 wheel nuts to opposite wheel studs in order to retain the rotor to the hub.

5) Remove the brake caliper lower guide pin bolt.

6) Without disconnecting the hydraulic brake flexible hose, pivot the caliper upward and secure the caliper with heavy mechanics wire, or equivalent.

7) Remove the brake pads from the caliper mounting bracket.

8) Push the disc brake caliper piston into the caliper bore using an old inner disc brake pad and a disc brake piston installation tool.

9) Remove the brake pad retainers from the caliper bracket.

10) Thoroughly clean the brake pad hardware mating surfaces of the caliper bracket, of any debris and corrosion.

11) Inspect the brake caliper guide pins for freedom of movement, and inspect the condition of the guide pin boots.


--Installation--


1) Make sure the brake pad hardware mating surfaces are clean.

2) Install the brake pad retainers to the brake caliper bracket.

3) Install the brake pads to the caliper bracket.

4) Remove the support, and rotate the brake caliper into position over the disc brake pads and to the caliper mounting bracket.

5) Install the lower brake caliper guide pin bolt. Tighten to 47 ft. lbs. (64 Nm).

6) Remove the wheel nuts retaining the brake rotor to the hub.

7) Install the tire and wheel assembly. Lower the vehicle.

8) With the engine OFF, gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately2/3 of its travel distance.

9) Slowly release the brake pedal.

10) Wait 15 seconds, then repeat the last 2 steps until a firm brake pedal is obtained.

11) Fill the master cylinder reservoir to the proper level.
