some times the transmission will not shift into gear when it is cold. you can shift it through the gears but does not engage. What could this be? thanks for the help and i am sorry that it is my first post on here....Mac

Listen; we try to help people when time permits. If you want fast service go down to your local dealer. But you won't get out of there without spending $75 or more for the talk.


First thing to check is the fluid level. If it hasn't been changed recently, change it. Past that, you probably need to bring it in.

How cold are you talking about?
Maybe the transmission needs attention or has been abused.
Some of the older harder valves can work better when softer warm and function more as intended. Synthetic rubber degrades with age and time and temperature. Remember the "O" rings on the shuttle rockets? Also these rubbers wear off and the residue is left to float around in the fluid and arent trapped by the filter or picked up by the pan magnet.

Moreoften a fluid visually in good shape doesnt perform well. It just doesnt have the same slippage as new oil and the valves cant seal as well with the impurity. If you try an additive or change the fluid you may better response. Comparing across manufacturers you will have to be your own advisor as to whether you like the quick thump or a quiet glide between gears.
4T60E transmissions have a common failure leak of valves like the TCC causing Torque Converter slip normally called "chuggle" with normal use and mileage. A leaky valve would or could cause less enguagement pressures available to generate a definitave shift.
