Hello group,

My '98 is giving the shop a code complaining about something to do with "rear Channel". My shop found a bad spring in the rear, and thinks it might be causing the ABS problem. What the heck is a "rear channel"? Thanks for any help.....

I had to have the rear ABS wiring harness replaced on my '97 Park Ave. Apparently the rear suspension was somehow abrading the wires. My Buick dealer did the work and I didn't actually see the details, but it sounds like your problem might be similar.

The rear channel is a part inside the ABS modulator that is bolted to the master cylinder. There is a Left, Right and Rear channel. The rear brakes are both pumped bya single rear channel. I think that there are several different codes that are for the rear channel. Do you know which code it is. If it is the "rear channel will not hold" or maybe it is "rear channel will not turn" code, thenI would guess that you need a new motor pack. That is the black plastic piece that is on the Master cyl. There is a way to test the Motor pack for this problem using a scan tool. You just manualy control the rear motor by applying it and release it. You should hear it run for about 1 sec and then it stops. Then run it the other way and it should do the same. If it just clicks then it is stuck and wont turn so it probably need replaced. You can also do the same with the Left and right channels so if your not sure how it should sound just apply and release the left or right channel and hear how they sound since they should be working fine still. All 3 motors should make the same sound and if one isn't then you know it has a problem. You probably should take it to a shop that knows what their doing.
