3800 engine misfires and acts like it is kicking back

I have a 1990 Buick LeSabre with the 3800 engine. Recently the engine has began to miss under mild acceleration. It is not just a misfire where the spark plug failed; it is more abrupt.

when the engine idles it almost always acts like it the engine is misfiring and it is like the engine is actually kicking back every nowand then. From inside the car while idling, I can feel the same phenomenon. I kicks!

I am not sure where all of the notorious sensors are located and I not feeling like they are at fault. The only one that I feel could be the culprit is TDC sensor or and anti knock device if it has one. Of course it could be the ignition module, I guess.

What I am thinking is that if this engine had an old fashion distributor, it would be as though a cylinder ignited out of sequence or before the piston reached the point that is near TDC. Could it be probable that the the module allowed the spark to set off another cylinder sporadically? Does this motor have an actual distributor cap? Could there be a short between some terminals?

It is not valves because for short periods of time the "miss" will vanish.

The check engine light is not on!

If your car has the direct ignition system, it probably has a bad crank position sensor or a bad ingition module. This same problem has been known to occur in the Chevrolet 3.1 engine with the same ignition system and won't necessarily trip a check engine light. The next most likely problem I would look into would be the timing chain, depending on your mileage. The crank sensor is relatively cheap and would be the first thing I would try. Please post you results- I'd like to know how you make out.

Hello there man. Your car might have a bad ignition. You really need a local mechanic to check the buick parts that are greatly affected with these ignition problem. This is also for you to have an overview to the problem so that the next time you encounter problems like this, you will be able to solve it by yourself already.

It might be a bad ignition problem because a faulty coil would cause an engine to knock. It would possible to cause bucking, if the coil is failing there would be a lack of spark, this would cause bucking or missfire, which may cause the engine to shake on it's mountings possibly causing a knock from contact with the vehicle frame.

Sorry I think I was unclear in my post, I was actually recommending the use of the engine power gauge not the EGT gauge. You are of course totally correct that the EGT is useless due to the small changes in its readings.

Try a new ICM and crank sensor. The crank sensor is behind the harmonic balancer and is relatively easy to take out. Before you take the sensor out, do a full rotation on the balancer and see if the pickup (3 prong metallic fork) has hit the crank sensor -- if that's the case you'll need a new balancer or to put the pickup back into spec after measuring specs with a micrometer. The crank position sensor is approx $40. It comes out with an 8mm wrench if I remember correctly. To test the ICM as the possible culprit, either use a sparkplug and go through each plug wire to check to see if spark is reaching it, or check the coil itself for a miss by removing the wire and check if spark is jumping from the towers.

missfire

Check all your plugs for a cracked insulator. Also check your plug wires for a burned one. Make sure all the coil towers are free of rust. Check the resistance of your coils Individual coils are 6 to 7 OHMs Single coil pack is 12 to 13 OHMS
