I can see now that the oil filter housing is seperate from the cover, otherwise the photo would show that it hooks up to the timing chain cover.
I need to check on if the harmonic balancer can turn as I attempt to remove it. Thanks again.

The balancer and pulley are one not to be separated. That unit is held in place by a key in the crankshaft and held on that shaft by a big bolt and must be pulled off the crankshaft by a puller. You must use a three bolt puller with a main threaded rod going thru the center. When you remove the big bolt, you will also remove a cover which exposes the area where the three bolt holes are that receive the three bolts in the puller. I am including a pic of the puller in the manual which is the Buick shop version and very expensive. Auto store sell a universal type which you can buy for about $10.

I wanted to supply the VIN# of my car to provide the engine code etc to see if the images you provided match the type of engine I have.

Looks as if my engine code is "S" not "L" as your photo illustration shows for the L engine. Not sure if your book shows info on an "S" engine code. I'm only assuming the "S" in the Vin# is the engine code but I may be wrong. thanks again!

 

I never heard of an S designation for an engine and might book doesn't show any. Too, all of the engine diagrams show the oil filter housing as not connected. encl. copy of vin # explanation.

 

Take a look at the photos. Some of the photos show the timing cover by itself. However others show the oil filter housing attached to it. I might be looking at it wrong. In any event, you have been the only person helpful on this forum so I tip my hat to you helping me!!I will be buying the harmonic balancer removal tool soon. I heard there is a special way to re-install the balancer and it includes not hammering it back on....
