I have a 92 Regal Limited. When accelerating, the engine will not rev past 2500 rpm, no matter how hard or soft I am on the accelerator. The only way that I can get it to go past 2500 rpm is to manually shift it intoa lower gear, but when I shift up it shifts so very hard. Is this a common problem? I mean i can't even get the car to downshift on the highway to pass someone. Any ideas what the problem might be, or at least some things I can start to check?

I figured it out, it was the kick down cable off the transmission. The cable was just too loose and thus would never get the proper acceleration or be able to kick down into a lower gear to pass.
